Hackthorn ODE- by Amy McPhail

5:45 flashed my alarm clock on the Saturday morning as I got dressed and went out to feed both Flynn and Jon-Jo, and then  came back inside to have some breakfast my self. An hour later having gotten everything ready for the both days I went out side to tie the two horses up and plait them up, when I dragged Flynn out of his stable I noticed he had really bad stable stains all over him as he had ripped his rug off over night!! Not the best thing to happen to a white pony lol. So I had to wash him again, he wasn't best pleased with me at all. On top of all of that, I later noticed we had no plaiting bands, and that the dressage numners were not the right  size, so decided to dispatch mother off to Chandlers immediately. Having already gotten everything in the lorry it was hard to find something to do whilst mum was away and so got Jon-Jo out of his stable and washed his feet off. I then really couldn't find anything to do so decided to go in and watch some quality television. Finally mum came back with not only plaiting bands and numners, but a new pair of Ariat boots for me, at last a pair of boots that fit! (I have rather large feet for my height...size 9 *cough* I'm only 5 ft 5*cough*). I managed to plait both of them up with time to spare even though Jon-Jo kept leaning on me with his neck trying to push me off my bucket, though failed miserably (literally he was in a mood with me for the rest of the day). We loaded them up and made our way to Hackthorn Hall.

When we got there we unloaded them and my mum tacked up Flynn whilst I was putting on the finishing touches to the outfit. If you know Flynn then you'll know that open  fields and a snaffle really don't get registered for dressage mode, more like 'gallop around everywhere' mode. So you can see where this is going, my dressage test consisted of me leaning back trying to stop him a lot of the time and also I umm forgot the test...oops lol. I then managed to warm up Jon-Jo who went a lot better though our straight lines really weren't straight lines they were more like" Oh My God lets spook at that white board randomly that's the other side of the arena" lol. But apart from that I felt it went quite well. After the dressage I stood at 6th place on Jon-Jo, but ermm came 14th on Flynn (out of 15) lol.

An hour later the show jumping started with Flynn and for once I got clear, and the fastest time of the day lol, he was also in his gag this time. But I got 4 faults on Jon-Jo as I dropped my hands and he knocked it down, but we got a really nice picture of him over the jump after it :D lol. After the show jumping I stood in 7th place on Jon-Jo and I had moved up yo 8th place on Flynn. That was the last thing of the day for me and we headed off to the organisers house (she let us stay over) so therefore I would like to thank her for letting us stay over as it was an awful lot cheaper driving 2 miles down the road rather than driving an hour and a half back home and an hour and a half back to the competition the next day.

Mum and I woke up at four O'clock Sunday morning as a set of the curtains in the lorry were broken and the sun rose then, we found it increasingly difficult to go back to sleep so woke up at 7 O'clock. I went to check on the horses to make sure they were still in their paddock, we fed them and tried to catch them, but Flynn was having none of it so we left them and poo-picked the field in stead. We did manage to catch them eventually when I caught Jon-Jo, Flynn just gave in lol. We brought them in and groomed them as Flynn had stayed remarkably cleaner, in a field lol. After we loaded them up and got to the show I had to warm both of them up as I had 20 minutes between the two of them starting. Flynn was first and I got a clear round on him and again the fastest round of the day, in my class, also being closest to the optimum time of 4 minutes 45 seconds, I took 5 minutes. And then there was Jon-Jo what can i say he stopped at every other fence to have a look, he stopped at a gate way because there was bale of straw by it!!, I eventually got eliminated at the water jump, he's not that confident with water yet, so I didn't get placed on him.

We stayed around for a while and watched some of the other class (class 3) on cross country and we were the arena party for the show jumping. After we waited around we found out that I had come 5th... ON FLYNN!!! With 19 faults between me and first place and then 40 faults between me and 6th place I was very pleased with that :D and I feel that Jon-Jo needs a lot more work with water before I go back there again lol. But all in all it was a very enjoyable experience.
